the agony of defeat (or something)

After Elizabeth's soccer game a couple of weeks ago, I looked across the field and noticed that she was crying. She had been playing goal at the end of the game and a little girl on the other team scored on her, so I assumed that that's why she was upset. I walked over to her, put my arm around her, and gave her a little pep talk about how great she played; how it was obvious that she was trying her best and having fun, and that's all that matters; how the other girl made a really great shot that would have been tough for anyone to stop. She looked at me totally confused. Turns out that she was actually crying because the family who was supposed to bring the team snacks that week had forgotten. Come to think of it, that's exactly the kind of thing that makes me cry too, so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

It's impossible to stay on an even keel without appropriate snacks!

When the boys were 7 we were on vacation, the boys were playing in the pool and another child whacked the pool basketball board and it hit Matt on the head, resulting in 17 stitches eventually, and lots of blood. Strangely, he did not cry a single tear. Alex, however, was sobbing great big heart wrenching sobs as we walked through the hotel lobby to the ambulance that had been called. Everyone was watching and asking what happened and giving Alex pats on the back and telling him it would be okay (thinking it was Alex who was hurt) and I was a little embarrassed telling people that it was actually Matt who had been injured and Alex was sobbing because he wasn't going to get to ride in the ambulance to the hospital. Just when you think you have it sorta figured out, the game changes. lol Snacks, are just as important as riding in the ambulance!
