My baby turned 4 yesterday.
I know this is true of most kids, but she really gets more fun every year. Really. Those of you who knew Caroline from the beginning will back me up on that.
Sometimes I ask her why she screamed so much as an infant. She says: "Ummmmmmm. I dunno." Clearly, she is not as permanently traumatized by those months as I am, since most of the time these days she looks like this:
She looooves her daddy, but this one is a mommy's girl. I'm okay with it.
She had a ball celebrating her birthday yesterday (even though I broke every birthday rule in the book and vetoed her restaurant choice - McDonald's - and made us go to California Pizza Kitchen). Here she is receiving some birthday greetings:
When she was in the midst of the Screaming Years, her pediatrician and I had this conversation over Caroline's wails:
C: Will she ever be happy?
Dr. A: WHAT?
C: WILL SHE EVER BE HAPPY??
Dr. A: Just wait. Someday she will be your great joy.
C: WHAT?
Dr. A: JUST WAIT. SOMEDAY SHE WILL BE YOUR GREAT JOY.
And he was right. This child is so full of joy. She adds an immeasurable amount of fun and laughter to our house. And while we still have to yell to hear each other talk, it's mainly happy noise in the background (well, and maybe a little bickering).
Happy birthday sweet Caroline!
